The Science Behing Drumming as Medicine

Drumming can induce a natural "high" by increasing Alpha brain waves.  Alpha waves help you to feel calm and relaxed. Drumming produces feelings of well-being and even euphoria, which can help those with mental illness, learning disabilites or physical ailments. 

Drumming is a great workout for your brain and actually can make you smarter because when you drum you access your entire brain.  Research shows that the physical transmission of rhythmic energy to the brain actually synchronizes the left and th right hemispheres.  So, when the logical left hemisphere and the intuitive right hemisphere of your brain begin to pulsate together, your inner guidance system or intuition becomes stronger. The sounds of drumming generates new neuronal connections in all parts of the brain.  The more connections that can be made within the brain, the more integrated our experiences become, this leads to a deeper sense of self-awareness.

Deer or Elk, which one is right for you?

The medicine or spiritual quality of an animal may be very beneficial to consider.  In shamanic traditions, one's relationship with the spirit of the animal, or its medicine qualities, can create an even richer relationship.  A simple way of finding the right skin  to use, is to meditate, or to go into a clear state within yourself, ask yourself what animal will support you and what animal you will want to work with or which animal wants to work with you.
